Up to 50 Breakout rooms can be created for a single meeting. The following instructions guide you through a breakout rooms feature that was introduced in December If you require the workaround solution prior to this release, go to Use breakout rooms in Microsoft Teams: pre solution. Ensure the meeting organiser and all participants are using the latest version of Teams.

Participants joining on Android, iOS mobile or tablet should download the latest update from the App Store. You must be the meeting organiser and use the Teams desktop client to access the breakout rooms option, and to manage breakout rooms and participants. If you want to use breakout rooms, you will either need to start a Meet Now meeting in a standard channel. Calls from chat interfaces do not support this feature as they are not considered meetings.

Files, recordings, and notes from a breakout room can be accessed in its chat. You and your students will be able to access these materials after the room has closed, but students will not be able to continue chatting or add additional materials. By default, breakout rooms will be set to automatically move students into opened rooms.

If you'd like to change this setting, switch the toggle for Automatically move people into opened rooms to off. When the automatic setting is turned off, students will receive a message asking them to join a breakout room. They will need to select Join room before being moved. Allow students to return to main meeting. By default, this setting will be off. To turn it on, switch the toggle next to Participants can return to the main meeting on. See which room each student joined, when they entered, and when they left.

Under Participants , select a student to see which breakout room they entered and what time they joined and left it. Reconfigure rooms and assignments by returning to the meeting controls and repeating the breakout room creation process. Select Recreate rooms and confirm your decision. As meeting organizer, you can send announcements to all the breakout rooms and contribute to any of the room chats. You may want to tell everyone the remaining breakout session time, offer discussion ideas, or just give general updates. Select Make an announcement. Each breakout room has its own chat. All of the chats are available in your main Teams Chat list.

Once you join a breakout room, you can also select Chat in the room to chat with the people there. Note: When the breakout room closes, the room chat ends and can't be continued. Hover over the room and select More options then Close room. You'll know rooms have successfully closed when their status changes to Closed. When everyone is back from their breakout rooms and you're ready to meet as a larger group again, select Resume.

If the rooms are reopened later in the meeting, participants keep the same room assignments they had before. Unless the organizer manually unassigns people from their breakout rooms, the same rooms and room assignments will be available for the next meeting. Learn which breakout room each person joined, when they entered it, and when they left. Under Participants , select an attendee to see which breakout room they entered and what time they joined and left it. You can also download the attendance report with breakout room data as a. Rename rooms Name your breakout rooms to represent smaller student groups or projects. Type in the new name and select Rename room. Set a time limit for the breakout session Keep your class on schedule and aware of the time they have left by setting a timer. When you're done, select the back button to save your changes. Send an announcement to breakout rooms Once breakout rooms have started, send announcements to share time updates or prompts. Type in your announcement and then select Send.

After a breakout room is closed, so is the chat; no more messages can be sent.

Add or delete a breakout room To add an additional breakout room: In the meeting controls, select Breakout rooms. Add participants to the room using the instructions above.

To delete an individual breakout room: In the meeting controls, select Breakout rooms. To delete all breakout rooms at once: In the meeting controls, select Breakout rooms. Close breakout rooms When you close a breakout room, the participants will automatically return to the main meeting. To close rooms individually: Select Breakout rooms. To close rooms all at once: Select Breakout rooms.
